In the movie, Coco is an orphan who was left behind by her father, who never came back for her. She was portrayed as a lady who led a humble life with her sister. It was not stated in any part of the movie that Coco lead a humble life. However, it is shown through the use of nonverbal communication. In the movie, many scenes were cast in their home, which is a little room which looks dark and nostalgic. It is definitely not one of the many houses that the riches used to live in in the past.
Not long later, Coco’s sister managed to find a boy of her dreams and decided to migrate to live with him. This left Coco all alone in the house. During this part of the movie, they portrayed Coco as a lady who has no one to turn to. At the same time, the use of a dark background also brought about the emotion of dull and sadness.
Shortly after, Coco managed to find herself a boyfriend, who often has to entertain his guests. Coco did not like hanging out with his friends and thus often locked herself up in the room. She was often shown to be smoking on the bed. Such scenes instill a feeling of loneliness in viewers. As smoking is often associated to loneliness and curiosity, and since Coco is no longer a young girl who is often curious about new things, we would associate the action to Coco being very lonely. She seldom smiles when she was with her boyfriend. In contrast, when Coco met Arthur, the boy whom she later fell in love with, she began to smile. This showed a big contrast between her feelings for her boyfriend and Arthur.
The use of nonverbal cues in this movie added emotions into the movie. the conversations were short and brief, showing that the casts were reluctant to talk to one another, and yet different emotions can be shown during different times of the show using either the lighting, facial expressions and actions.
The pragmatic approach stated that “it is impossible not to communicate”. This is very true in Coco Avant Chanel. Communication comes in many forms, and in the movie, most of the communication is done through nonverbal communication. Thus, in order for one to understand and feel the way Coco did, the viewer has to be able to catch the nonverbal cues that were shown.
I have watched the show too,and i agree that nonverbal communication is used in this show. The way the show portrays certain information to the viewers is through the facial expression of the actress and actors.A look from Coco to Arthur can tell us how she really loves her and the part where she found out Arthur was dead, her facial expression showed one of deep sorrow.
ReplyDeleteTowards the end of the show where Coco was a successful designer, she still felt lonely. As she recalls her past, smoking her cigarette, sitting on the staircase while her models model her outfits to potential clients, you could see how crestfallen she was.
We would have expected Coco to be happy because she is successful, but it showed that in the end,no matter how successful she was,she felt lonely because she had nobody to love.
This show is portrayed differently from the films that we normally see.Definitely a MUST-WATCH.
We can't live without talking. We talk through our voice, our facial expression, our body language, our emotions, signals and of course in words. Even the mute depends on hand signs or writing to communicate. It is psychologically proven that if one is unable to communicate to others, he will develop his own language/signs to get his message across.
ReplyDeleteCommunication is not just about blabbering on and on. From the methods I’ve just mentioned, we can realize that verbal language is way defeated when the other methods ‘combine forces’. That is exactly what makes Coco Avant Chanel an excellent art. If Coco Chanel had repeatedly mentioned that she’s lonely, she’s sad, she hates functions etc, we would not be able to fully comprehend her situations and emotions. Watching, deciphering and experiencing her experience through ‘combined forces’ complete the communication process.
We can’t live without communication.
C'est tres bon film, non? J'aime Audrey Tatou. Elle utilise ses yeux pour agir. La Communication sans paroles
ReplyDeletei agree that the director plays a lot with the music and emotions of the movie to put across his intended message. nonverbal cues was used to complement the emotions and music, thus sending across a very strong and holistic message to the audience.

Great flm with great actors. =)
ReplyDeleteI believe that communication is all part and parcel of our lives, be it verbal or nonverbal communication. I really cannot imagine how life would be like if we are not able to communicate. We would probably not even be able to survive.

The use of music in this movie also helps to complement the nonverbal cues that were being sent out. This is because the different music that the director used in the movie adds different kinds of emotions into the different areas of the movie. since most of the movie is communicated nonverbally, messages have to be sent through an implicit way, and music is one of the easiest and most powerful way of sending the message across.
ReplyDeletethe subtle use of some verbal communication in the movie also helps to put some messages across. Though most of the scene made use of nonverbal communication to showcase the sad and dark life of Coco, verbal communication between herself and her fiancée also shows that their relationship was on the rocks and that both of them were very unhappy being together.
ReplyDeleteAlthough the verbal communication does not contribute much to putting across the message in the movie, it does help to complement the use of nonverbal communication in one way or another.

Although the intended message that the director wishes to send across is to showcase the sad life of this lady, I feel that there is another intended message in this movie – that is, how strong a woman can be in fighting for her own happiness in her life. In this movie, it clearly shows that a woman is at a loss when it comes to fighting for happiness, because she is ruled under the thumbs of men.
ReplyDeleteas the saying goes "silence is golden"
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree with rebecker. The power of this movie lies in the interpretation of the actions and nonverbal cues rather than what is said. This is what makes the message more impactful and touching.

this movie also makes use of a lot of script to put across its message. For example, the one that is used most often in this movie is the script of a lonely woman. In a normal script, lonely women are often portrayed being unkempt, sitting in bed, smoking and being all alone. Many of the scenes in this movie is as such, as it allows viewers to instantly recognize this scene as one that is filled with loneliness and sadness. Should another script be use in place of this, I believe viewers would not be able to relate to it as well.

I haven't caught this movie, but in my experience, the best films are those that make ample and use of non-verbal cues in communicating. What sets good films apart from the mediocre 1s is the mastery of the director in incorporating those cues into the movie.
ReplyDeleteOf course, the actors and actresses play a significant part as well.
The use of simplicity in her fashion sense also portrays a hidden meaning the movie. even though it was in fashion during their time that ladies are meant to be dressed sophisticatedly, Coco begged to differ. She designed shirts in simple designs and in black cloth. This shows that even though it was a norm to be dressed with many accessories, Coco was not influenced by the people around her. She has her own style and perceptions, something which has a special touch in it. This is what brought Chanel to become a worldwide known brand today.
ReplyDeletethe use of pathos in this movie is very significant because the director plays a lot on the emotions of the viewers. When we watch the movie, seeing Coco sitting all alone in bed, smoking, we would thus feel sorry for her. This is because being an orphan who was abandoned by her parents, she is now again neglected by her husband. This use of emotions helps to support the reason for her finding another man who is able to give her all his attention. Instead of feeling that she has just cheated on her husband, I personally felt that she has done the right thing – to fight for her own happiness. Though it is not something that lasted for long, but at least for that moment, she was happy once.
